The Owner-Operator's Dumpster Driver App: Driving and Dispatching From One Phone
Plenty of roll-off companies are one person and one truck, maybe with a spouse handling the phone part-time. The owner takes the call, books the can, drives the delivery, runs the swap, hauls to the landfill, sends the invoice and chases the payment. All of it from a phone, often from the cab.
After Onboarding a New Roll-Off Driver on the App in One Shift, this guide is for the owner who is both dispatcher and driver.
Why a Solo Operator Needs a System
When it is just you, it is tempting to run everything from memory and texts. That works until the day you have twelve cans out, three swaps requested, a delivery for tomorrow you forgot to write down, and a customer who says they were never told about the overage. The bigger the rental count gets, the more the business depends on a memory that is also trying to drive a truck.
A system is not about adding work. It is about putting things in one place so your head is free to drive.
It also makes the business easier to step away from. A solo owner who gets sick for two days, or wants a weekend off, needs someone else to be able to see what cans are out, which swaps are due and where the next delivery goes. If that lives in your head, nobody can cover for you.
Requests In, Day Planned
Requests land on the Waiting List on a live map, whether they come from a phone call you booked or from the customer app. In the evening or early morning, assign the next day's jobs to your truck on the dispatch board. Auto-routing gives you a starting order. Adjust it for the things you know: the contractor who wants the swap before 8, the landfill that closes early on Saturday.
Then switch to the driver app and run the list.
Planning the evening before has another benefit: you load the right can first thing in the morning without thinking about it, because you already looked at the size on the first job.
Running the List
Your day in the driver app looks like any driver's day: jobs in order, site and haul-to one tap from navigation, size and unit number on each job, placement and access notes, photos, start and complete, on-the-way and arrival texts. The difference is that when a new request comes in at 11am, you are the one deciding where it fits. Pull over, check the Waiting List, add it to the board, and the driver app picks it up.
That split between deciding and driving is the real value for an owner-operator. When you are in the cab, the app tells you what to do next. When you are parked, you can step back and look at the whole picture on the board. You are not trying to plan and drive in the same moment.
Billing Without a Desk Day
Completed jobs become invoices. Rental tracking keeps days included and the daily rate after, and extra days are invoiced automatically. Scale-ticket weight is entered on the job and overage is billed per ton. Customers can pay online and keep a card on file in the customer app. Contractor accounts are billed monthly. For a solo operator, that is the difference between an evening of paperwork and an evening off.
Customer Communication Without Your Cell
One of the hardest things for an owner-operator is keeping customers off their personal cell. The one-tap texts, the customer's live map and two-way texting give customers what they need without calling you mid-swap. Replies come in tied to the customer, and you can answer them at the next stop, not while backing up to a can.
Customers also judge a small company by how organized it feels. An on-the-way text and a live map make a one-truck outfit look as put together as anyone in town, and that matters when a contractor is deciding who gets their next three jobs.
When You Hire Your First Driver
The day you add a driver, nothing changes about the system. You add them as an employee, give them a login, and assign jobs to their truck. They see their list; you see the board. You are never billed per user, so the first hire does not change your plan price. Plans are Start $59/mo, Pro $89/mo and Crew $199/mo. For more, see the dumpster driver app page.
