The Friday Pickup Rush: Scheduling Around the Weekend
Friday afternoon is when it hits. Homeowners who worked on their project all week want the can gone before the weekend. Contractors want a fresh empty for Saturday work. And the Monday morning calls start piling up on Sunday night in voicemail and web requests. The weekend shapes the whole week's pickup schedule, whether you plan for it or not.
Why Fridays Get Crowded
Projects end on Fridays. People want their driveway back for the weekend, or they want the can gone before guests come over. Contractors want an empty in place for Saturday so the crew is not idle. All of that turns into calls on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.
In a backlog like the one covered in Clearing a Pickup Backlog in Busy Season, Fridays get even worse, because everyone who has been waiting all week calls again to ask whether you will make it before the weekend.
Plan Friday on Wednesday
The best way to handle Friday is to start on Wednesday. Look at the Waiting List and the rentals on the ground. Which customers are likely to call Friday? Contractors with regular swaps, homeowners who said they would be done by the end of the week, rentals coming up on their included days. Text them midweek: "Want us to plan your pickup for Friday?"
That turns surprise Friday calls into planned Friday jobs, which you can group into runs and route in advance.
Some customers will say yes to Thursday if you offer it. A homeowner who is basically done on Wednesday does not need to wait until Friday; they just assumed they had to. Every pickup you can move from Friday to Thursday is breathing room for the day that always overflows.
Watch the transfer station, too. If your haul-to sites close early on Fridays or Saturdays, your Friday afternoon pickups have a hard cutoff. Route the far loads early and keep the late-day jobs close to a site that will still be open.
Keep Some Friday Capacity Open
Do not book Friday solid with deliveries. Leave room on the dispatch board for the pickups and swaps that will come in. If a truck is booked full by Wednesday, you have no way to respond to the Friday calls without overtime or disappointed customers.
When Friday requests do come in, check the Waiting List map for clusters and assign them in groups to the trucks with room. Auto-routing helps fit them into the day.
Weekend Requests
Requests keep coming over the weekend through voicemail, the customer app and web request forms. Most roll-off companies do not run pickups on Sunday. Decide what you will do and tell customers clearly.
Set expectations where customers will see them: on your web request form, in the customer app request confirmation you send by text, and on your voicemail. "Requests received after Friday at noon are scheduled starting Monday" is clear and fair, and it stops people from expecting a truck on Saturday morning.
Whatever your hours, review weekend requests first thing Monday, before runs are built. A request that came in Saturday night should be on the Waiting List map by 7 a.m. Monday, grouped with everything else. Requests left until noon Monday miss the first runs of the week.
Saturday Swaps for Contractors
Some contractors work Saturdays and need a swap Friday afternoon or Saturday morning. If you offer Saturday service, price it and schedule it on purpose. A short Saturday run of contractor swaps, all close together, can be good business. A Saturday spent driving across the county for single pickups is not.
For contractor accounts billed monthly on one invoice, Saturday swaps go on the same bill, with whatever premium you agreed on.
Protecting Drivers From Burnout
Roll-off driving is physical and the days are long. A schedule that runs hard every Friday and then hits Monday with a pile of weekend requests wears drivers out. Spread pickups across the week where you can, by talking to customers early and booking pickups for Thursday rather than waiting for Friday.
Clear, routed days in the driver app help, too. A driver who knows the order, the sites and the haul-to addresses for the whole day finishes faster than one who gets calls every hour.
