Handling the Price Shopper Who Calls Five Dumpster Companies

Some callers open with a single question: how much for a 20 yard? No project, no address, no date. They are calling down a list, and they are writing down numbers. It is tempting to just give the number and move on. It is also the easiest way to lose a job you could have won.

Following Building a Clear Dumpster Quote: Line Items, Sales Tax and Terms, this guide is about how to answer price shoppers in a way that wins more of them without cutting your price.

Price Shoppers Are Comparing the Wrong Thing

The customer is comparing base prices, but base prices are not the same thing from company to company. One includes a week, another a few days. One includes more weight, another less. One company quotes with delivery included, another adds it later. The cheapest number on their list is often not the cheapest rental.

Your job is to help them compare the right thing without lecturing them. Give your price, then say what it includes in one breath: days, weight, delivery and pickup. Then offer to text it so they can compare in writing.

You do not need to criticize the other companies. In fact, do not. Just make your own terms so clear that the customer naturally starts asking the other companies the same questions. Many of them will come back to you after hearing vague answers elsewhere.

Ask One Question Before the Price

Before giving a number, ask what the project is. It takes ten seconds and changes everything. If it is a roof tear-off, you can mention that weight matters and that a smaller can may cost them less overall. Now you are an advisor, not a price on a list.

Customers remember the company that asked about their project. Most of the other companies on their list just said a number.

If they truly refuse to say, give the price and the terms anyway, politely. Some people just want a number. You can still send the quote and let follow-up do its work.

Get the Quote Into Their Hands First

Price shoppers often book with whoever makes it easiest once they are done comparing. If your quote is sitting in their texts, approvable with a tap, while the others are numbers on a notepad, you have an edge. Send the quote during the call or right after.

Online approval means they can book with you at the moment they decide, even if it is 10 at night. A competitor who needs a callback during business hours just lost the race.

Make sure the quote that goes out is the full picture: size, price, included days and weight, and the rates after. A shopper comparing a clear written quote against a few scribbled numbers will usually trust the written one, even when it is not the lowest figure on the page.

Follow Up, Do Not Chase the Price

Automatic follow-up on quotes that sit keeps you in front of the customer while they decide. Do not use the follow-up to cut the price. Use it to make booking easy and to answer questions. Two-way texting helps here; many shoppers reply to a follow-up with the one question that decides it.

If the customer says someone is cheaper, ask what is included in that quote. Sometimes the answer is fewer days or less weight. Sometimes it is just cheaper, and you decide whether that job is worth matching. Either way, it is a decision, not a reflex.

Know When to Walk Away

Some customers are only shopping on price and will always take the lowest number. You will not win all of them, and you should not try. A business built on being the cheapest is fragile. A business built on clear quotes, reliable delivery and good follow-up holds up better.

Look at your quotes over time. If you consistently lose a certain kind of job on price, you can adjust your rates or decide that job is not for you. That is a better outcome than cutting prices on every call.

Also look at where the shoppers come from. If one source sends nothing but price shoppers and another sends customers who book, that tells you where to spend your advertising money.

Make Being Easy Your Edge

You cannot control what other companies charge. You can control how quickly you answer, how clear your quote is and how easy it is to book. Those are the things that turn a price shopper into a customer.
