Delivery, Pickup, Swap, Dump & Return and Relocate: Setting Up Dumpster Rental Job Types
Every roll-off company does the same five kinds of work, but plenty of them call it ten different things. One person writes "exchange," another writes "swap out," a third writes "trade." That is harmless on a whiteboard and a real problem in software, because the job type decides what the driver does and what the customer gets billed.
Route Order and Auto-Routing for a Day of Drops, Swaps and Pulls covered the order of a truck's day. This guide covers the building blocks of that day: the job types.
Delivery
A Delivery sets an empty can at a customer site. It starts the rental. In DumpsterBossPro, the delivery date on the job is the start of the rental clock, so the days included and any extra days are counted from there.
For a delivery, the driver needs the site address, the size and unit number, and the placement and access notes. There is no haul-to on the way out, since the truck is carrying an empty, but the job should still record the debris type so the eventual pull goes to the right facility. Delivery is the job type where a placement photo matters most, because it shows exactly where and how the can was set.
Pickup
A Pickup pulls a can from the site and ends the rental. The driver hauls the load to the haul-to address on the job, the landfill or transfer station, and the scale-ticket weight in tons is entered on the job. The pickup date on the job closes the rental clock.
Pickup is the job type where billing gets decided. The days between delivery and pickup are compared to the days included, and extra days at the daily rate go on the invoice automatically. Any tons over the included weight are billed per ton. A pickup that is done but never marked complete is a rental that never gets billed correctly, so drivers should treat the complete button as part of the job.
Swap
A Swap pulls a full can and sets an empty in the same visit. It is the bread and butter of contractor work. The driver arrives with an empty, sets it, loads the full, and hauls it to disposal. Or, depending on the site and your setup, he pulls first, drops the empty and comes back.
Because a swap involves a load going to disposal, it carries a haul-to address and a scale ticket. Record the weight on the swap job so any overage is billed for that load. Whether a swap restarts the rental days or continues the existing rental is your policy; decide it, write it into your quotes, and apply it the same way every time.
Dump & Return
A Dump & Return pulls the can, hauls it to disposal, empties it and brings the same can back to the same site. It is common when there is only one can that fits a tight spot, or when you are short on empties of that size.
The job carries both addresses: the site to pull from and return to, and the haul-to for the load. The scale ticket goes on the job. Dump and return takes longer than a swap because the truck makes a round trip with the same can, so price it and schedule it with that in mind.
Relocate
A Relocate moves a can, either to a different spot on the same site or to a different site entirely. A contractor finishes the demolition on one side of a building and wants the can moved closer to the next phase. A customer with multiple job sites wants the same can moved to another address.
Put the new location in the job notes or as the new site, and include clear placement instructions. If the can is going to a different site for the same customer, keeping both sites under that one customer keeps the history straight. Many companies charge for a relocate since it is a full truck visit. Make sure that charge is on the job so it ends up on the invoice.
Using Job Types Consistently
The value of job types comes from using them the same way every time. When every swap is a Swap, your reports can tell you how many swaps you did last month and which contractors drove them. The dispatch board can show at a glance which jobs need an empty on the truck and which need a run to disposal.
Train the office on the five types, retire the old nicknames, and make the job type the first thing chosen when a request comes in. The next guide moves to the cab and covers what the driver app should do for roll-off drivers. To see how job types fit into the whole system, visit the DumpsterBossPro dumpster rental software page.
